Suite M Photography Blog – Brian Hamilton bio picture

Welcome to my Blog!

Hello and welcome to the Suite M Photography Blog. My name is Brian Hamilton and I am the owner and head photographer for the studio.  The purpose of this blog is to not only show you more of my work, but also to allow an opportunity for you to get to know a little more about me and the wonderful people that work for Suite M.

Suite M Photography, formerly Marsyla's Studio, has been in business over 25 years. It was started by renowned wedding photographer Russ Marsyla and his wife Sandra.  Russ and Sandra chose an ideal location for their business.  We are located right next door to one of the largest wedding dress retailers in the country, mon Amie Bridal Salon.  Throughout the years Marsyla's Photography has taken pictures of thousands of weddings and events.

My wife and I, looking to expand our small photography business, purchased Marsyla's Studio.  As a result of this purchase, the studio went through a name change.  We chose Suite M Photography for several reasons.  First, we are located in Suite M.  Second, in order to honor Russ and Sandra and the legacy that they have built, we wanted to establish the M (as in Marsyla) as a significant letter.  You will notice on our website that all of the tabs begin with an "M." And lastly we noticed that many things we enjoy in our lives begin with an M, for example: marriage, music, movies, memories, and moments.

If you have any questions at all, please contact me or one of my staff members. I look forward toward meeting you.

Picture you later.

Laguna Beach Sunset – Lorene & Randy E-Session

Tis the season for clouds in Southern California!  My favorite time to do engagement sessions is definitely during the winter.  The summer skies can be so boring.  Dark blue, light blue, aqua blue, you get my point.  Not a cloud anywhere.  Clouds can make pictures so much more dramatic and that’s why I love them.  Speaking of love, Lorene and Randy are getting married this fall at the Ritz in Marina Del Rey.  I originally met Lorene and the Gingerich family when I had the opportunity to photograph Lorene’s sister’s wedding (Karli & Josh).  What a great family and I’m not just saying that because they booked me again.  Their family was so warm and friendly.  They made me feel right at home the moment I walked in.  They were also incredibly generous.  I remember after Karli’s wedding reception, which they had catered, they gave me a arm full of extra food to bring home to my family.  And I mean an armful of bbq food with all the fixin’s.  Anyway, Tricia (my assistant), Lorene, Randy and I spent our SoCal winter taking some pictures for their engagement session. They were so much fun to work with.  I feel very fortunate to be asked to photograph Lorene and Randy’s wedding.  And I am looking forward to that day in September!

Enjoy!!!!

Shoreline Village, Long Beach – Lety & Sam’s E-Session

Lety is an architect. Sam is a chemist. But don’t let those serious titles fool you. They are a fun, relaxed, easy going couple. We had a great time together one afternoon in Long Beach. Long Beach seemed like the perfect spot to do their engagement shoot because they just bought a house in Long Beach, Lety works in Long Beach, and their wedding is going to be at the Madison in Long Beach.  We got some great shots on the carousel, down on a pier, and ended the session with a couple of beers.  These are just some of the great pictures from that day.

Enjoy!

The Pacific Edge Hotel, Laguna Beach – Posh Productions Inc.

Last week I had the pleasure of photographing for Carol Miller and Posh Productions Inc at an event at the Pacific Edge Hotel in Laguna Beach. What a great location of have a party. You can rent out 5 rooms as well as the deck that connects the rooms. The rooms are right on the beach and that spot during sunset is just gorgeous.  The event began after sunset, but I was able to get a couple of shots before that magical light went away.  I have also included of course some shots of the fantastic food, including the sushi bar, from Posh. I would like to also say that the Posh staff is so kind and pleasurable to work with (thanks for the samples Chef). It was nice meeting Sarah Lawson of Posh as well and seeing Harold Wherry of the Blue Breeze Band again.

Please enjoy.

Brian Hamilton – Bio

I just updated the bio section on my web site and I thought I should place the same information on my blog. So here it goes.

Me and You
I feel it is very important to know and feel comfortable with your photographer.  That is why I want to share so much of me with you.  On your wedding day your photographer (sometimes your coordinator) is one of the only people you hire that is with you consistently throughout the day.  So I do my best to establish a good working relationship with the couples I shoot for.  They know what to expect from me and I know what to expect from them.  This helps both of us feel that we have made a good decision.  For the couple, it is the decision to include me in the most important day of their lives.  For me it is the decisions I make as to how to capture that day.  This is why I include a detailed planning session and a signature session (usually engagement session) in all of my packages.  I learn what is most important about their wedding day, about each other, and about how they like to be photographed.  I get to find out if a couple prefers a modern journalistic style or a more traditional approach to their pictures.  This knowledge helps me fine tune shots to meet their needs.  If I know what they are looking for I know how to capture their day so when they look at their album they remember the details that made it special.

My Photographic Story
As long as I can remember, I have always owned a camera and enjoyed taking pictures.  I remember learning from my dad, who was a photographer himself, about basic techniques and most importantly composition.  The thing I was frustrated with was that on any given picture I had to wait for developing to see how they turned out. And the learning process was slow. When I was first married, my wife and I took a vacation to Austria.  I wanted to capture that trip with some amazing pictures.  When I came home and got them developed, the results were’t always what I had pictured when I originally took the picture.  So, needless to say, when I began shooting digital a whole new world opened up to me.  I was able to experiment with different techniques and learn about my results instantly.  I was truly in my element. Combining photography, art, and technology was truly great.

My Studio
My wife and I were looking to expand our small photography business which led to the purchase of Marsyla’s Studio.  Marsyla’s Studio was originally owned by a renowned photographer, Russ Marsyla and his wife Sandra. Years after Russ passed away the studio was taken over by Mike Steffens, owner of Essence Entertainment.  I began photographing for Mike and a few years later, my wife and I purchased the studio.  That led to a name change.  We chose Suite M Photography for several reasons.  First, and most simply, we are located in Suite M.  Second, in order to honor Russ and Sandra and the legacy that they have built, we wanted to establish the M (as in Marsyla) as a significant letter.  You will notice on our website that all of the tabs begin with an “M.”  Finally we noticed that many things we enjoy in our lives begin with an M, for example: marriage, music, menus, movies, memories, and moments.

My Wedding Story
When I first began shooting digital I was intrigued by things in nature.  A favorite picture in our home is a picture of a leaf dripping with dew.  I was encouraged to put this picture and others in a coffee shop that featured local artists.  I sold that picture as well as another of a bird in flight.  This was my first real experience of success with my photography.  I have had many positive comments from family and friends up until that point, but this was the first time I made money.  It was an exciting time for me.  I started out shooting weddings when a friend of mine was getting married.  He and his bride to be were paying for the wedding on their own and had a limited budget.  I wanted to help him out, so I gave it my best shot.  From that wedding, I received three other referrals, which led to more referrals.  I began to refine my technique and my style, specifically for weddings.

My Likes and Dislikes
I have many interests. Pick a couple of topics and I can probably talk to you about at least one of them. Some of the things that I enjoy beyond photography are sports, music, theater, traveling, and technology.  The list of the things I like is almost endless.  My dislikes are simple.  I don’t like being disappointed and I don’t like to disappoint.

My Family
I have a somewhat unique situation when it comes to my immediate family. The first thing you should know that I have been married to my wife (and business partner) Holly since 1998. We did the usual traveling, relaxing, dining, and various activities that accompany a married couple without kids.  In 2004, our lives changed forever.  We welcomed our twin boys, Connor and Cade to our family.  They are endless amount of laughter and fun.  When our boys were around eighteen months old, we decided to add to our family again.  Hoping for one more we checked with our doctor about the possibility of having a second set of twins.  Comfortable with her answer that it was very unlikely, we decided to try for our third.  We soon learned that some things are beyond our control.  In March of 2007, we welcomed home our second set of twins, this time a boy and a girl, Grant and Brooke.  Everyone asks us what it was like when we found out we were having a second set of twins.  The truth is that my wife and I were surprised but not shocked.  We did spend the first hour not knowing what to say to each other.  We would simply look at each other and shake our heads.  But once we warmed up to the idea the whole thing became more of a blessing.  Our children have been a complete joy to us and although we had to give up going to the movies on a whim, we would not have our lives any other way.  We feel so fortunate to have four beautiful and healthy children.

My Education
Education has always been very important in my family. Both of my parents were teachers as was my wife. In fact there are nights I still wake up in a cold sweat, haunted by those four words my dad would ask me every single day, “Is your homework done?” I would even hear it on occasion when I was attaining my master degree. Fortunately I knew he meant well and just wanted to make sure I succeeded. I know now he is very proud that I attained my bachelors and masters degree and that I am a professor at Long Beach City College as well as run my own photography business.  Without my education, and of course my parent’s support, I definitely would not be where I’m at today

Huntington Beach Hyatt – Winnie & Craig

Winnie and Craig are a lovely couple. They got married at the Hyatt Huntington Beach on a beautiful Southern California sunny day in October. I had the pleasure of photographing their wedding with my friend and second shooter Kate.  We had plenty of time to capture some great moments from their wedding day. They Hyatt presents so many great indoor and outdoor photo opportunities as you will see by some of the photos below.  Even though Winnie and Craig are traditional in respect to their cultures and families, they still enjoy pictures that are more modern in nature. Kate and I enjoyed capturing  that juxtaposition of traditional and modern.

Much Happiness to the two of you!

Beverly Hills Hotel Wedding – Jennifer & Brad

The majority of weddings I photograph occur in Orange County, CA.  I always enjoy it when I get a chance to venture off the beaten path to shoot a wedding. Jennifer and Brads wedding took place in this foreign land called Beverly Hills.  I know, it sounds familiar doesn’t it.  Brad and Jennifer were so much fun and I had a wonderful time photographing them as well as getting to know them, their families, and their wedding party.  Here a just a few of my favorites from that amazing day. I also wanted to give a special thanks to Paula Laskelle from Champagne Taste for making the day run so smoothly.

Enjoy!

Big Canyon Country Club – Mary & Eddie’s Wedding

What a great day. Mary and Eddie were wed on October 17, 2009. They are such a sweet couple. My assistants and I had a great time not only photographing their wedding, but also getting to know them, their families, and their wedding party.

Mary and Eddie had their wedding at my favorite location,  The Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach. Their service is top notch and it is just beautiful for taking pictures. I could easily spend 8 hours shooting there with a bride and groom. From classic stone structures, to the valley of beautiful greens, there are endless possibilities when taking pictures there. I want to especially thank Jeremy Samson, Assistant General Manager, and the rest of his staff for not only organizing a great wedding, but catering to me and the other vendors.

The day began taking pictures of Mary getting ready at the club.  I then took Eddie to hole 1 on the golf course where we waited for Stacy (my assistant) and Mary to meet us.  After taking pictures of them on the course, we went back to the main club and shot in and around the hallways and rooms.  One of my favorite locations is the wine room (see pic below). It is very dark and moody. When we were done with the b & g shoot, we met up with the wedding party and families to take their pictures.  Then I made my way out to the ceremony location which was on the grass close to hole 13 (I think).  Stacy stayed back and photographed the parade of golf carts that took the wedding party to the ceremony location.  After the ceremony, it was on to cocktails and the reception.  It was a great night, with great people, at a great location.

Enjoy a few of my favorite pictures from the day!
